A memorandum has been submitted to the Home Affairs Advisor demanding the cancellation of the promotion to Assistant Police Superintendent and the arrest of Police Inspector Abu Shama Mohammad Iqbal Hayat, a regular accused in cases under the fascist Awami League's influence. The memorandum was submitted to the Home Affairs Advisor through Rajbari District Administrator Sultana Akter on Sunday noon by the District Volunteer Team on behalf of the victims.
District Volunteer Team Convener Abdul Malek Khan, Member Secretary Tuhinur Rahman, and leaders and activists from various levels of the district were present during the submission. After submitting the memorandum, Member Secretary Tuhinur Rahman of the Rajbari District Volunteer Team addressed journalists, stating that on January 12, 2014, he was abducted, subjected to enforced disappearance, tortured for extortion, and an attempt was made on his life. He was tortured and a ransom of 10 lakh taka was demanded. Five lakh taka was taken, and he was produced in court in various cases. He had to undergo treatment in hospitals both at home and abroad. The Acting Chairman of the BNP, Tarique Rahman, bore the cost of his treatment. He still cannot stand upright and frequently falls ill, requiring hospitalization.
On August 25, a case was filed in the Rajbari Baliapur Court naming 10 individuals as accused, including former Railway Minister Zillul Hakim and former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baliakandi Police Station, Abu Shama Mohammad Iqbal Hayat. The case was recorded at Baliakandi Police Station on August 30. Despite being a regular accused in cases, on October 21, the Police-1 Branch of the Home Ministry promoted Police Inspector (Unarmed) Abu Shama Mohammad Iqbal Hayat, listed at serial number 15, to the position of Assistant Police Superintendent.
They demanded the immediate cancellation of the promotion and the arrest of Abu Shama Mohammad Iqbal Hayat, an associate of the fascist Awami League. They warned that if he is not promptly arrested and his promotion revoked, stricter programs will be undertaken.
