Enraged students and public demolish Awami League office in Rajshahi.
Daily Bijoy News Special Correspondent:
Rajshahi has been rocked by the news of the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, the convener of the Inqilab Manch. In protest of this incident, enraged students and the public have completely demolished the office of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League. Around 12:30 AM on Thursday (December 18th), thousands of students from Rajshahi University entered the city from the campus in a protest march. Students from various halls and departments joined the march. At the same time, the NCP brought out a separate protest march in the city. Additionally, students from various educational institutions in the city spontaneously joined the movement. Protesters circled important city roads, chanting various slogans of protest. At one point, when the situation heated up, the enraged students and public gathered in front of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League office located in the Kumarpara area of the city. Later, an excavator was used to completely raze the office building to the ground. During this time, widespread tension and incidents of vandalism occurred in the area.
Eyewitnesses stated that the violence erupted from intense protest over the students' long-standing grievances and the recent death incident. The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the incident and exemplary punishment. It is worth noting that after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5th last year, enraged students and the public had set fire and vandalized the same office. Before the wounds of that incident could heal, the office has now been completely destroyed again. So far, no reports of casualties have been received from this incident. Additional law enforcement forces have been deployed at various important locations in the city to keep the situation under control. Heightened vigilance continues across the entire area.
