Rizwana: Bricks will be prohibited government project.
Daily Bijoy News Special Correspondent:
On Friday, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced that the interim government plans to eliminate the use of bricks in government construction projects by 2025 in a bid to reduce the administration’s carbon footprint.
She informed BSS in an interview that government offices have already been notified of the ban, emphasizing that the public sector is the largest consumer of bricks in the country.
The government is also determined to phase out nearly all brick kilns nationwide to safeguard the environment and strengthen efforts to combat climate change. Rizwana revealed that around 3,491 illegal brick kilns, which lack environmental clearance, will be shut down.
Additionally, the government has decided not to approve the construction of any new brick kilns, relocate illegal kilns operating in various districts, and close down those responsible for environmental pollution.
To encourage more sustainable practices, the government will promote the production of concrete blocks and block bricks, which are more durable, recyclable, and long-lasting. However, it will refrain from taking action against zigzag brick kilns, as they are gaining private investment due to their significantly higher energy efficiency compared to traditional kilns.
Rizwana further stated that the government has instructed zigzag kiln owners to comply with environmental laws and regulations, warning that failure to do so will result in their kilns being shut down as well.
