A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others in connection with the death of grocery shop owner Abu Sayeed, who was killed in police firing in the Mohammadpur area of the capital on July 19. The case was lodged by Mohammadpur resident Amir Hamza Shatil in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury.

Advocate Md Mamun Miah confirmed the development on Tuesday, listing the other accused as Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB Chief Harun Or Rashid, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, and former DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker.

In addition to these individuals, several unnamed high-ranking police and government officials have also been implicated, according to the advocate.

In his lawsuit, Amir stated that Abu Sayeed was killed around 4:00 pm on July 19 when police, acting on orders from the IGP and the then Home Minister, indiscriminately fired at students and civilians during the quota reform protests. Amir added that the victim’s family, who reside in Boda Upazila, Panchagarh district, are unable to pursue legal action themselves regarding the incident.
