Daily Bijoy News | Narail District Correspondent:
Two siblings named Taslima Khanam (15) and Kawsar Sheikh (8) drowned in a pond in Narail's Naragati. Ujjal Roy, District Correspondent from Narail, reports that their bodies were recovered from the pond behind the house of Daud Mir in Shibannandpur village of the upazila on Tuesday (October 7) evening by local people. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naragati Police Station, Asikur Rahman, confirmed the incident. The deceased were the children of farmer Azibar Sheikh from Shibannandpur village under Naragati police station in the upazila. Taslima was a 10th-grade student at Bordoia Secondary Girls' School, and Kawsar was a 2nd-grade student at Shibannandpur Primary School.
According to family members and local sources, a local person saw Taslima and her brother Kawsar heading towards the pond behind the neighboring house of Daud Mir on Tuesday evening. When they did not return home for a long time, family members started searching for them. Later, locals saw Taslima's scarf on the bank of the pond and searched the pond. The bodies of the two siblings were recovered from that pond. The father of the deceased, Azibar Sheikh, claimed that his children did not know how to swim and drowned after entering the pond to bathe.
However, their mother, Baby Begum, said, "My daughter knows how to swim; they could not have drowned. My husband and his brothers beat me and drove me out of this house 8 to 9 months ago. Later, my husband married again. They have killed my children in a planned way, thrown them in the pond water, and are now claiming they drowned."
Officer-in-Charge of Naragati Police Station, Mohammad Asikur Rahman, said, "Upon receiving the news, we went to the spot, completed the inquest, and sent the bodies to the Sadar Hospital for autopsy. An unnatural death case has been registered at the police station regarding this incident. Further legal action is underway."
